For the past five years, the AKF’s Comprehensive Sanitation Initiative (CSI) has been actively working in four states, namely Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. In the initial phase, the project focused on promoting toilet usage through behavioural change to achieve 100% sanitation coverage in the targeted geographies. Over time, the programme has expanded to include various additional aspects of sanitation. Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) India aimed to conduct an evaluation to assess the programme’s progress towards key objectives and to generate knowledge and learning on the results of the Comprehensive Sanitation Initiative for developing a roadmap to support the ODF++ approach.

DevInsights utilized a cross-sectional mixed-method research design. Supplementing the cross-sectional methodology, mixed-method tools were used to collect, analyse and interpret quantitative and qualitative data within a single study that investigates the same underlying phenomenon. A total of 1600 households and 300 students from 60 schools across four states were covered. In addition, around 60 in-depth interviews and approximately 20 FGDs were conducted with different stakeholders.

Key services provided included finalizing the evaluation design, tool development, field team hiring and training, data collection, analysis and report writing. CAPI tools were developed for data collection.
